Digging up the family tree
While looking at my mother's family in the census, I tracked back from her father, Samuel Percy Short, bookseller (born in Guildford in 1882, died 1936, during her honeymoon), to her grandfather, also Samuel Short, commercial traveller, born in Devonport, Devon, 1851, married to Grace, died ?1920s. This led to her great grandfather who was Robert Short, born 1814, died about 1865, married to Mary. They had loads of kids, some who died young: Eliza, Sarah, Robert, Henry, Ann, Mary, Amelia, Ellen, Samuel. But get this: in 1841 his profession is listed as "Scripture Reader". This is what you see above, 'Scripture reader in a night refuge' by Gustave Dore. He would go round the poor houses and refuges and soup kitchens reading the bible to them all. Also in 1851 he has changed it to "Wesleyan Missionary". Yea, even to the fifth and sixth generations, people!!!
